    A tankless conversion can affect more than the water pipes. Tankless water heater flow rate

The flow rate indicates how many gallons of hot water a tankless unit can produce per minute. Higher flow rates result in higher costs, but a high-flow system is worth the investment for larger families relying on that water heater all at once.

Tankless water heater fuel type

Gas tankless water heaters are more expensive than electric ones, especially if you need a new gas line installed. However, they have lower monthly operating costs. Cooper installs both systems and can even install a gas line if needed.

Warranty length

A tankless water heater heats water as it is needed instead of maintaining a large storage tank.

When a hot-water fixture opens, water flows through the unit and is heated by a gas burner or electric heating element before traveling to the fixture.

A properly sized tankless system can provide continuous hot water as long as the amount of water being used stays within its heating capacity.

It does not provide unlimited gallons per minute.

If several fixtures demand more hot water simultaneously than the unit can heat at the required temperature rise, water temperature or flow may be affected.

The correct GPM depends on how many hot-water fixtures may operate simultaneously and how much water each fixture uses.

A plumber should estimate your peak simultaneous demand rather than choosing equipment based only on household size.

GPM means gallons per minute.

It describes how much hot water the system can produce under specified operating conditions.

The actual available GPM depends partly on the temperature rise required, so the same water heater may deliver different flow rates under different incoming-water conditions.

Temperature rise is the difference between incoming cold-water temperature and the desired hot-water outlet temperature.

For example, heating 50°F incoming water to 120°F requires a 70°F temperature rise.

The greater the required temperature rise, the more heating capacity the tankless unit needs to maintain a particular flow rate.

A tankless system must add enough heat to bring incoming water to the selected outlet temperature.

Colder incoming water requires a larger temperature increase, which can reduce how many gallons per minute a particular unit can deliver.

That makes winter performance an important part of tankless sizing.

The answer depends on the flow rate of each shower, incoming-water temperature, selected outlet temperature, and the tankless unit’s capacity.

The combined demand of both showers and any other operating fixtures must remain within the system’s available output.

A properly sized system may support both simultaneously.

DOE (Department of Energy) specifically notes, however, that simultaneous hot-water uses can reach the flow limit of some tankless systems. That is why peak household demand should be calculated before equipment is selected.

Neither is automatically better.

Gas tankless systems generally offer higher flow capacity and may be more practical for high-demand whole-home applications. Electric tankless units eliminate combustion venting but can require substantial electrical capacity.

The better option depends on utility service, household demand, equipment cost, operating cost, installation requirements, and available space.

Whole-home gas tankless water heaters can have significantly different fuel-input requirements from conventional storage water heaters.

Is a Tankless Water Heater Right for Your Home?

You Regularly Run Out of Hot Water: A properly sized tankless system can continue heating water as long as demand remains within the unit’s rated capacity. That can be especially useful for households that frequently drain a traditional storage tank during back-to-back showers or other extended hot-water use.

You Want to Eliminate Standby Tank Heating: Storage water heaters maintain hot water inside a tank even when nobody is using it. Tankless systems heat water only when there is demand, eliminating those storage-related standby losses.

You Need More Floor Space: Tankless water heaters are typically wall-mounted and do not require a large storage tank. That can free up usable space in a mechanical room, basement, utility closet, or other appropriate installation area.

Your Household Uses Several Fixtures at Once: This is where proper sizing becomes especially important. A tankless system may provide continuous hot water, but it cannot provide unlimited flow. If several showers, faucets, or appliances call for hot water simultaneously, the combined flow may exceed what the unit can heat at the required temperature rise. DOE notes that even large gas-fired units can reach their limits during simultaneous high-demand use.
