Our Water Heater Installation Process

  • Schedule Your Free In-Home Estimate

Call (720) 605-7270 or schedule online to request a complimentary water heater replacement estimate. Tell us whether the system is leaking, producing insufficient hot water, is completely out of service, or is being proactively replaced.

  • Evaluate Your Current Water Heater and Hot-Water Needs

Our plumbing professional will inspect the existing equipment and installation. We may review: Existing tank capacity, Gas or electrical connection, Venting when applicable, Available installation space, Water piping and shutoff valves, Drainage and drain-pan requirements, Household hot-water usage, First Hour Rating needs, Expansion-control requirements, Visible code or safety concerns. This helps us recommend the right replacement instead of simply matching the gallon number on the old tank.

  • Compare Your Replacement Options

We will explain the available water heaters that fit the home and your budget. Depending on your goals, that may include different tank capacities, efficiency levels, warranties, gas or electric options, or an alternative such as a tankless or heat-pump water heater. You will receive upfront pricing before approving the project.

  • Remove the Existing Water Heater

Once the installation is approved, our team disconnects and removes the old equipment while taking precautions to protect the surrounding area. If the existing installation has outdated connections or other conditions that must be corrected for the replacement, we will explain those changes.

  • Install and Connect the New Water Heater

Our plumber positions and connects the replacement equipment in accordance with the approved installation. Depending on the system and property, this may include: Water connections, Gas or electrical connections, Venting, Temperature and pressure relief components, Drain pan or drainage provisions, Expansion-control equipment, Shutoff valves & Other code-required installation components.

  • Test the Water Heater

Before completing the appointment, we check the new water heater for proper operation and inspect the completed connections. We also explain the system controls, recommended temperature settings, basic maintenance, manufacturer warranty information, and what to watch for after installation.

  • Enjoy Cooper’s Installation Protection

Qualifying water heater installations include a 1-year Cooper labor warranty and our 100% Satisfaction Guarantee. Same-day replacement may be available depending on equipment availability, the existing installation, permit requirements, and scheduling.

"New water heater…completed in just four hours."

Brendan Dugan and Paul from Cooper came out to give an estimate on a hot water heater replacement. Brendan created a quote within 5 minutes. The installation of the new water heater to replace the old 20-year water heater we had (lots of work to bring up to code) was completed in just 4 hours. Thanks again to Brendan & Paul!

Water heater installation cost factors:

Tank capacity

Larger tanks cost more, so finding the right size is crucial. A tank that is too small results in cold showers, while an oversized one leads to increased energy bills. Our plumbers will help you choose the ideal tank size to avoid unnecessary expenses.

Energy Factor (EF)

A tank water heater's efficiency is represented by its EF rating. Higher ratings typically mean higher costs, but more efficient heaters lower monthly energy bills. Our team will assist you in selecting a water heater that balances installation costs and long-term energy savings.

Warranty length

Water heater warranties vary, with longer ones generally costing more upfront. However, extended warranties can protect against costly repairs for up to 10 years. The choice for added protection ultimately lies with you. If you're interested in these warranties, our plumbing experts can help.

Water Heater Installation FAQs

Your Cooper Green Team installs and replaces residential water heaters throughout Denver and surrounding communities. Our licensed plumbing professionals install traditional gas and electric tank water heaters and can also help homeowners compare tankless and heat-pump water heaters.

The correct water heater depends on household hot-water demand, not simply the number of bedrooms or the size of the old tank.

For storage water heaters, plumbers consider tank capacity and First Hour Rating, which estimates how much hot water the unit can deliver during a busy hour.

Household size, simultaneous showers, laundry, dishwashing, large tubs, and other hot-water uses can all affect sizing.

Neither is automatically better.

A 40-gallon water heater may provide enough hot water for some households, while others may benefit from a 50-gallon or larger tank.

The better comparison is the household’s peak hot-water demand and the water heater’s First Hour Rating, recovery rate, fuel type, and efficiency.

First Hour Rating, or FHR, estimates how many gallons of hot water a storage water heater can provide during a busy hour starting with a fully heated tank.

Two 50-gallon water heaters can have different First Hour Ratings, which means they may not deliver the same amount of usable hot water during periods of heavy demand.

UEF stands for Uniform Energy Factor.

It is the current standardized measure used to describe water-heater energy efficiency. In general, a higher UEF means greater efficiency when comparing similar types and sizes of equipment.

UEF has replaced the older Energy Factor, or EF, metric as the primary efficiency measurement for current residential water heaters.

Homeowners comparing new equipment should generally look at UEF rather than relying on older EF information.

The better choice depends on the home.

Gas water heaters require appropriate fuel supply, venting, combustion provisions, and installation conditions. Electric water heaters require sufficient electrical capacity and an appropriate circuit.

Homeowners considering a fuel change should compare installation cost, equipment efficiency, utility costs, electrical capacity, available space, and long-term plans before deciding.

A heat-pump water heater may be worth considering if you want a highly efficient electric water-heating option.

These systems have different space, temperature, drainage, electrical, sound, and tank-sizing considerations than a standard gas or electric water heater. ENERGY STAR and DOE guidance also emphasize appropriate First Hour Rating and installation conditions when selecting heat-pump water heaters.

Many straightforward tank water heater replacements can be completed during one service visit.

Installation may take longer when the project requires venting changes, plumbing corrections, electrical work, difficult equipment access, permit coordination, or updates to an older installation.

Same-day replacement may be available depending on equipment inventory and appointment availability.

In many situations, same-day replacement may be possible when a compatible water heater is available and the installation does not require unusual modifications.

Availability depends on equipment, scheduling, permit requirements, installation conditions, and the scope of additional work.

Denver includes water heaters among the plumbing projects eligible for residential quick permits for single-family and duplex properties.

Requirements can differ for multifamily buildings, commercial properties, gas-fired equipment, or projects involving additional changes. Cooper can review the permitting requirements that apply to your installation.

A replacement water heater must be installed according to current requirements and manufacturer instructions, even when the old water heater was installed many years ago.

Depending on the existing setup, the project may require changes to venting, piping, shutoff valves, electrical connections, pressure control, drainage, or other installation components.

It depends on the plumbing system.

Expansion tanks are commonly used in closed plumbing systems to accommodate the increased volume that occurs when water is heated.

A plumber can determine whether an expansion tank or another pressure-control measure is required for the installation.

The temperature and pressure relief valve, commonly called the T&P valve, is a safety component designed to release water if excessive temperature or pressure develops inside the tank.

It should never be capped, plugged, or intentionally disabled.

Water near the bottom of a water heater may come from a drain valve, nearby connection, temperature and pressure relief discharge, condensation, or a leaking storage tank.

If the tank itself has deteriorated and is leaking, replacement is generally required.

A plumber should identify the source before assuming the entire water heater has failed.

Sometimes.

Leaks from replaceable valves, fittings, or connections may be repairable. A tank that has corroded through and begun leaking generally requires replacement because the storage vessel itself is failing.

Possible causes include incorrect sizing, a low First Hour Rating for the household’s demand, thermostat settings, installation problems, unusually high hot-water use, or equipment malfunction.

The tank capacity alone does not determine how much hot water the system can provide during a busy period.

Usually, a larger storage tank provides more stored hot water, but tank size is not the only factor.

Recovery rate and First Hour Rating determine how quickly the system can replenish hot water while it is being used.

An oversized tank may also cost more without providing a meaningful benefit if the household does not need the additional capacity.

Often, but the installation must be evaluated first.

A larger tank may have different physical dimensions, weight, venting, gas input, electrical requirements, drainage needs, and First Hour Rating.

The available installation space and household demand should be checked before increasing capacity.

Water heater replacement cost depends on the equipment, tank capacity, fuel type, efficiency, warranty, installation location, venting, plumbing condition, electrical work, expansion-control requirements, permitting, and whether existing components need to be updated.

An in-home evaluation is the most reliable way to receive an accurate installation price.

Do You Need a New Water Heater?

Your Water Heater Is Leaking From the Tank: Water coming from a connection, valve, or fitting may be repairable. Water leaking through a deteriorated storage tank usually means the tank itself needs to be replaced. If water is actively spreading across the floor, shut off the water supply to the unit if you can do so safely and call for plumbing service.

You Keep Running Out of Hot Water: Running out of hot water does not automatically mean the tank has failed. The issue may involve household demand, thermostat settings, sediment, a burner or heating element, a damaged dip tube, or a water heater that is simply too small for the amount of hot water your household now uses.

Your Water Heater Needs Frequent Repairs: Repeated service calls can make replacement more practical than continuing to repair aging equipment. We can compare the tank's condition, current repair needs, efficiency, warranty status, and replacement cost so you can make an informed decision.

You Are Changing the Way Your Home Uses Hot Water: A growing household, new bathroom, larger bathtub, remodeled kitchen, additional appliances, or changing routines can increase hot-water demand. Instead of automatically replacing your old tank with one of the same size, Cooper can evaluate whether a different capacity or First Hour Rating would better support your household.

You Want a More Efficient Water Heater: Efficiency has improved across many water-heating technologies. Depending on your home, you may want to compare a high-efficiency gas storage water heater, conventional electric tank, heat-pump water heater, or tankless system. We will explain the differences before you decide.
